SAN DIEGO DANCEWORKS MONTHLY NEWS Monday, October 2nd Within the first few weeks of the new semester Ms. Barbara, dance instructors and office staff gathered for a nice lunch to discuss studio policies and future important dates. A lovely digital flyer of these studio policies and important dates can be found here. New decorations have been added to the studio lobby, there are great headshots of our amazing dance instructors hanging on the wall with a little blip about themselves and their accomplishments. Future lobby renovation plans include new furniture and snazzy new floors! A new Improv class has been added on Fridays 4:30 PM – 5:00PM for kids ages 8 – 12. Classes explore improvisation as a skill to develop movement invention.  Improvisation games help the dancer explore the elements of dance;  body, energy, space, and time. Improvisations are formed into choreographic studies with dancers performing in solos, duets, and groups. Two spots have opened up on the petite and star level competition teams. Anyone interested should contact Teran Brown at danceworkscompetition@gmail.com. Competition dance teams are in full swing! Show your support by donating dancewear to the sale before October 22nd. TADA! – The Theater and Dance Act, commonly knows as its acronym ‘TADA!’, was signed September 27th by California governor Jerry Brown. This bill institutes a new system that certifies dance instructors with the state. ‘TADA!’ opens up many more opportunities for dancers that want to move forward in the career of teaching. Certification allows theatre and dance instructors to teach in the public school curriculum without needing English or Physical Education credentials, allowing instructors to work much like visual arts and music teachers. ‘TADA!’ has finally passed after 47 years of continuous effort, now California can join the other 48 states, leaving West Virginia the only state left to make dance and theater instructors jump through hoops to teach in the public education system. Upcoming Events October 5th – World Ballet Day (All Day) San Francisco Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, The Australian Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet and The Royal Ballet come together to perform for a 22 hour livestream across the world. (link) October 15th – Pumpkin Carving at the Park (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM) The Danceworks is holding a fun outdoor fundraiser at North Clairemont Park! Welcome Back! 2011 is here and we are excited to be back. We have new classes for January 2011.  See the list of classes below.  Help us spread the word about San Diego Danceworks by bringing a friend to the studio.  If they sign up for a month of classes and pay the registration fee you will receive $25.00 off your next month’s tuition.  Now is the time to join to be a part of San Diego Danceworks recital. Location of the 2011 Annual Recital Production of Peter Pan is: Pacific Beach Middle School 4676 Ingraham Street San Diego 92109 Performance is  Sunday August 7th Dress Rehearsal is Saturday August 6th Costume and recital fee of $100.00 is due by February 1st. Recital fee includes two tickets to the recital. New Classes for 2011 Mon. 4:00 – 5:30 pm Advanced Hip Hop Ages 9 – 13 years. Students will learn more advanced hip hop moves and choreography.  Two years of dance experience required or trial class for placement. Saturday 11:30 – 12:30 am Beginning Hip Hop for Ages 10 – adult.  A fun introduction to the hip hop style.  Hip Hop dance develops rhythm, coordination, and fitness while giving the student the chance to express themselves. Wed. 4:00 – 5:00 pm  6 – 8 years Beginning Hip Hop An introduction to the hip hop style.  Dancers develop rhythm, coordination, and self expression. Wednesday 5:00 – 6:00 pm  9 – 13 years Level 1 Hip Hop For dancers with one year of dance experience or trial class for placement. Monday 5:30 – 6:30 pm Creative Stages Improvisation/Choreography Class for Ages 10 – 15 years.  Students must be enrolled in two technique classes at San Diego Danceworks (one technique class must be modern or ballet)  to participate.  Students will be guided through improvisation that will then be used to create choreography.  Drawing and writing will also be incorporated to bring out the expressive qualities of the dancers.  The choreography will be presented in the summer production of Peter Pan and at the Celebrate Dance Festival in August.
